Sonya Ross is a highly qualified and experienced voice coach who has dedicated her life to studying and teaching a wide range of aspects of language, linguistics and voice. Born and brought up in the Highlands of Scotland, she has called London home since 2005, and has both accents to prove it!
After completing her undergraduate degree in English Language from Edinburgh in 2001, she spent four years teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) – mainly to Business clients in France – during which time she discovered that she had a particular passion for teaching pronunciation, an area which is unfortunately – but understandably* – often neglected in TEFL.
She returned to the UK in 2005, once accepted on to the renowned MA in Voice Studies at the Central School of Speech and Drama, at the time the only course of its kind in the UK. A transformative year of in-depth study of vocal anatomy and physiology, pedagogy, phonetics, and personal vocal practice, the syllabus was a thorough preparation for coaching in a variety of settings, from theatre to corporate communication.
After graduating, Sonya spent some years teaching in drama schools such as Italia Conti and Central itself, before returning to her roots of working with non-native speakers of English, this time taking the time to focus on pronunciation! She now works as an independent coach in London, and over the years has helped hundreds of clients gain more choice and control over all aspects of their spoken voice. She still works with clients on vocal confidence, general elocution and speech clarity, but has a keen passion for Accent Reduction for non-native speakers of English.
Among her clients are executives from a variety of backgrounds (PR, financial services, insurance, sales), lawyers, medical professionals, musicians and actors. Sonya has seen time and time again how exploring and mastering the sounds of a new language can make communication easier, increase your confidence and also be fun! She has been through the process herself while learning French over the years so she knows very well how it feels to be in the learner’s shoes.
Her coaching has been described by her clients as thorough, patient, enjoyable and most importantly, effective. her enthusiasm for her subject is infectious!
Sonya lives in north London and in her spare time she is a keen reader, writer, walker, traveller and animal lover.
*There are many other things to cover when teaching English, so there often just isn’t much time for pronunciation.
